Sony and McCann choose Costa Rica for new commercial

A colourful new commercial for Sony 4K TV’s has been launched, featuring three tonnes of brightly coloured petals erupting form a volcano and heading towards a local Costa Rican village.

A colourful new commercial for Sony 4K TV’s has been launched, featuring three tonnes of brightly coloured petals erupting form a volcano and heading towards a local Costa Rican village.

Filming the extraordinary spot involved amassing eight million locally and sustainably sourced real and biodegradable petals with all effects shot in real-life, with no computer graphics, and filmed on the Sony F55 and F65 cameras. It is set to the track Berlin by RY X. The eight million petals - the number of which was estimated based on their weight - represent the eight million pixels contained in the new Sony screens.

Created by McCann London, the director of the commercial was Jaron Albertin, who said: “I was really excited to be shooting this ad in 4K in such an amazing location. Because there is twice as much data, it looks twice as crisp which means you can see even the tiniest detail.”
