British actress Imogen Poots (Fright Night, 28 Weeks Later) is to star in Todd Field’s next project, a feature adaptation of Jess Walters' international best-seller Beautiful Ruins.
Field, who has amassed several Academy Award nominations for films such as In the Bedroom and Little Children, has adapted the novel with Walters for the big screen, and will take the helm when shooting starts in May next year in Italy.
Walters’ book - which has sold over a million copies - is set in the early 1960s on the Ligurian coast and pitches several characters and themes against each other, including an American war veteran writing his memoirs and an Italian hotelier in love with an American actor. The intertwined stories, which are set against the backdrop of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor filming Cleopatra, are linked by one woman, Dee Moray (Poots).
Field’s shingle Standard Film Company will produce Beautiful Ruins, along with Cross Creek Pictures’ Brian Oliver and Tyler Thompson. Smuggler Films are also on board, fielding producers Patrick Milling Smith and Brian Carmody.
Poots’ recent credits include Filth, The Look of Love and All is by My Side. She recently finished filming Peter Bogdanovich’s Squirrels to the Nuts with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, and Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups with Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale.
