Wilmer Valderrama is to join Columbian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno on director Sarah Siegel-Magness’s upcoming historical drama, Castro’s Daughter, with shooting planned to take place in Puerto Rico next year.
The movie will tell the story of Alina Fernandez, (Moreno) born three years before her father, Fidel Castro came to power. In 1993 she fled Cuba in disguise as a Spanish tourist, later writing her memoir entitled, “Castro’s Daughter: An Exile’s Memoir of Cuba.
Valderrama, best known as Fez in That '70s Show, will play Fernandez’s childhood friend, Eduardo, who suffered persecution under the Castro regime, before being ordered to leave on the Mariel Boatlift in 1980 when Castro allowed 125,000 refugees to leave Cuba for the U.S.
The movie is to be produced by Sarah Siegel-Magness with Gary Magness under the Smokewood Entertainment banner, alongside John Martinez O’Felan and Joe Lamy of Mankind Entertainment. The screenplay was written by Bobby Moresco (Crash) and Nilo Cruz, author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna in the Tropics.
Oscar-winning production designer Brigitte Broch, who worked on Moulin Rouge, has also been hired to work on the film.
