Pinewood’s shiny new studio complex in Malaysia is now home to Marco Polo, an epic new historical drama for Netflix.

The production office is up and running ready for principal photography to begin at the end of this month, with the five month shoot also due to take in Italy and Kazakhstan.

The nine-episode series comes from behemoth producers The Weinstein Company (TWC), and marks a significant move into high-end TV drama for the shingle.

Set in 13th century China, the show was originally ordered by Starz, and was going to shoot in China itself, but after lengthy negotiations it is now under the Netflix banner, and based in Malaysia.

Series creator John Fusco (Hidalgo) exec produces alongside Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg (directors of the forthcoming Pirates of The Caribbean 5) and Dan Minahan. Ronning and Espen will also direct the first episode.
