An Icelandic news website first reported that a production crew for episode VII is to visit the country in April to take plate shots.

This follows the news that a film crew for Star Wars previously visited Iceland for a location scout.

It is known that the president of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy, is keen for the much-awaited sequel to feature many on-location shoots.

Last year at the Star Wars Celebration Europe event she said: “Looking at all the Star Wars movies and getting a feel for what even some of the early films did, combining real locations and special effects – that's something we're looking very seriously at. So we're going to find some very cool locations that we're going to use in support of Episode VII.”

With attractive tax incentives, a diverse offer of locations and a dedicated film commission, Iceland is currently a very popular location for feature films, as we discussed in a feature last month. Films that have used the country as a location for their shoot include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Dead Snow 2 and Noah.

Principle photography for Star Wars Episode VII, to be directed by JJ Abrams, is set to begin in May.

The film is due for release on 18 December 2015.
