New feature film Brooklyn, based on a script by Nick Hornby, started filming yesterday (31 March) in Ireland.
Boy A director John Crowley is directing a cast including Saoirse Ronan (The Grand Budapest Hotel), Domhnall Gleeson (Anna Karenina), Emory Cohen (The Place Beyond The Pines), Jim Broadbent (Iris) and Julie Walters (Billy Elliot).
The film – an adaptation of Colm Toibin’s bestseller of the same name -will shoot for three weeks in Enniscorthy, Wexford and Dublin, Ireland, before moving in mid-April to Montreal, Canada for a further four weeks of filming.
Set in the early 1950s, Brooklyn tells the story of a young woman, Eilis (Ronan) who moves from a small town in Ireland to Brooklyn in New York, where she has the opportunity for work and fall in love with the Italian-American Tony (Cohen).
But when a family tragedy brings her back to Ireland, she finds herself gladly absorbing her old community and repeatedly postpones her return to America. It is time to make the choice between two men and two countries…
Producers are Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey. Production design is by François Séguin.
The script was developed by BBC Films, and the co-producers are Wildgaze Films/Finola Dwyer Productions in London, Parallel Films in Ireland and Item 7 in Canada.
