Paolo Sorrentino, the man behind the spectacular Oscar-winning film The Great Beauty, has signed a deal with Sky Italia and Italian production company Wildside to direct his first ever TV series, The Young Pope (working title).
Sorrentino will both direct and co-write the 8 x 50 minute series together with writers Stefano Rulli and Umberto Contarello.
The series will be set in Vatican City, Italy, Africa and the US and will tell the story of the first Italian-American Pope. The cast - as of yet unknown - is said to be international.
The Young Pope will be a US/Italy co-production and will be produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani (Wildside), with John Lyons as executive producer.
In a statement the producers said: “Sorrentino is the first world-class Italian filmmaker who did not only decide to write and shoot a TV series for the world market, but to entirely write and shoot it himself.”
“The series is about a Pope’s dreams, fears, conflicts, struggles, and the search for meaning and the need for love, as seen through Sorrentino’s unique style that is able to create worlds that can appear at the same time amazing and more real than reality.”
Sorrentino is currently working on another feature film In the Future (Il Futuro), which is set to film in May and will star Michael Caine.
The film is a drama depicting the friendship between two old people and is produced by the director’s regular collaboratorss, Nicola Giuliano and Francesca Cima.
