Malta has increased its cash rebate to 27%, allowing filmmakers to benefit from a 25% rebate with an additional 2% if they feature “Maltese cultural elements”.

Announced by the Maltese Government and subject to state approval, the new rebate - an increase of 5% over the previous rates - will no doubt add to Malta’s appeal as a filming location; productions to have filmed there recently include zombie flick World War Z and The Whale - a one-off drama produced by the BBC for BBC One and Discovery. The latter of which used the gigantic water tank at Malta’s Mediterranean Film Studios as well as locations in Gozo.

The new rebate now includes post-production as an eligible cost (€150k cap per project), and also extends to international TV series and transmedia.

As well as the incentive changes, Malta’s film commission also revealed its new logo as part of their re-branding; which also includes a shiny new industry guide.
