Rhys Ifans and John Malkovich in Dominion
Rhys Ifans (Anonymous, Elementary) is to portray the late poet and fellow Welshman Dylan Thomas in a new film set to shoot in New York in late May. John Malkovich and Diego Luna also star.
According to Variety, the film will focus on the alcoholic writer’s final days – he went to New York on a poetry tour in 1953 and died there aged just 39 in November of that year.
The feature is produced by Richard Gladstein who is working alongside writer/director Steven Bernstein.
This year marks the centenary of Thomas’ birth, and there are several commemorative projects already in the pipeline. Tom Hollander is playing Thomas in a BBC/Modern Television production, A Poet in New York, which was filmed last summer. BBC Wales have also recently been making a feature length TV version of his most famous work, Under Milk Wood, starring Tom Jones, Michael Sheen, Sian Phillips and Matthew Rhys. This too, was partly shot in New York and also in Laugharne, west Wales.
Under Milk Wood is also being made into a feature by writer/director Kevin Allen, with Ifans once again portraying the troubled Welshman. The film will be shot in both English and Welsh, with filming set for later this summer in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
