Spain to offer tax incentive for film and TV production

spain film tax incentiveThe Spanish government has announced it is to offer international productions filming in Spain a 20% tax rebate.

The newly announced bill is currently in its draft phase and is expected to still be amended slightly after it will be debated in parliament. When the bill will come into force is currently unknown.

The news of the tax rebate has brought comments of disappointment from organisations in the local film industry, such as FAPAE – the Spanish producers’ lobby, who were hoping for a more generous tax incentive to match the likes Germany, France or Italy, which offer rebates of up to 40%.

Up to now, some regions in Spain have dealt with the government’s unwillingness to introduce a more attractive rebate by offering their own incentives. Valencia, for example, launched a film fund in 2009 which offers producers the opportunity to claim between 16% to 20% of their local spend, as long as the production in question has a local co-producer and shoots 33% of the film in the local area.

However, Spain does have some co-production treaties which can help control the cost of production. These include long-standing treaties with France, Germany, Austria, Russia and Canada.
