Filming will take place in Switzerland for Peter Greenaway’s second feature about Russian film director Sergei Eisenstein, entitled The Eisenstein Handshakes.
According to Screen International, the British director will cover Eisenstein’s time in Switzerland, including his attendance at the very first film festival in the world in La Sarraz and the films he made in the country – one of which was the very first feature made in Switzerland.
The film marks Greenaway’s second film about the director – the first being Eisenstein in Mexico, shot earlier in the year. The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover director plans on finishing cutting the film by the end of September and aims to premiere it at the 2015 Berlin Festival.
Greenaway said: “The very first film festival in the world was created in 1929 in La Sarraz, close to the French border, and it was attended by many important experimental filmmakers of the time. And the most important guest was Eisenstein who came to Switzerland with his assistant Alexandrov and his wonderful cameraman Tissé.
“But what is also extraordinary is that the very first film ever made in Switzerland was directed by Eisenstein, so we have written a script to cover this interesting cinematic, historical experience.”
Greenaway hopes the film will be a co-production between Switzerland, Russia and France.
