Pirates of the Caribbean may head to Australia

Johnny Depp The long-awaited fifth film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series may be heading to Australia as the federal government reached a deal with Disney.

The A$21.6m incentive was offered by the government following a request from the Hollywood studio giant; the finance had previously been allocated to the House of Mouse’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, a project which sunk when director David Fincher dropped out.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, now with repurposed funding, is to be directed by Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg and will see Johnny Depp reprise his role as the swaggeringly irrepressible Captain Jack Sparrow – a portrayal famously inspired by Keith Richards.

With shoot dates yet to be locked down, it is likely that cameras will roll from early 2015 – it just remains to be seen if Disney will take the bait and base the shoot in Australia.
