Filming starts at the end of this month in Czech Republic on The Zookeeper’s Wife, starring Jessica Chastain and Daniel Brühl.
In the feature, the country will be doubling for Poland where the real life events, upon which the film is based, unfolded. Specifically, Exhibition Park, in the centre of Prague, is doubling for Warsaw Zoo, with a bank in the city playing a hotel.
Filming actually starts today (9 September) for the animals involved in the film, as the production team needs to capture the last light days of summer for some of the zoo shots; three local animal wranglers have been hired.
From Diane Ackerman’s book of the same name, the film, directed by Niki Caro, centres on the moving story of how a animal keeper at Warsaw Zoo, Jan Zabinkski and his wife Antonina, turned the menagerie into a refuge during the Second World War - their actions saving the lives of around 300 Jews and many animals.
