Bourne 5 films scenes in Washington DC

Scenes for the upcoming fifth movie in the Jason Bourne action franchise are being filmed in Washington, DC, this week.

Matt Damon returns to the role he first played in The Bourne Identity in 2002, while filmmaker Paul Greengrass is also back as director for the third time in the franchise’s history. Location filming has already taken place in the Canary Islands, Berlin and London.

Washington is a popular film setting, but production restrictions and multiple layers of local bureaucracy mean shooting generally only extends to a few days.

Netflix drama House of Cards and the political comedy Veep are both set in Washington but have largely used Maryland as a double.

Earlier this year Washington’s Office of Motion Picture and Television Development launched a modest $1.2m fund for a series of rebates, in a bid to boost the city’s location filming appeal.

Damon and Greengrass previously found huge success with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum. An attempt to continue the franchise without them resulted in the underwhelming The Bourne Legacy in 2012, which failed to find as large an audience.
