Dwayne Johnson to film Baywatch in Georgia

Action star Dwayne Johnson is set to headline a Baywatch movie in Savannah, Georgia, with Seth Gordon attached as director.

The Baywatch movie will reportedly be a comedy spin on the successful 90s TV series (pictured). Paramount is likely aiming to emulate the tone of the 2012 comedy 21 Jump Street, a big-screen adaptation of the 80s crime drama that helped launch Johnny Depp’s career.

The film version of 21 Jump Street was a big hit with Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as the leads, and generated a sequel last year.

Georgia has set itself up as one of the top production hubs in the US, although filming is focussed on Atlanta. Marvel has filmed two of its latest superhero productions in the city – Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War – and is scheduled to return for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and a reboot of the Spider-Man franchise.

Savannah has the coastal settings necessary for Baywatch and has had a profile boost with movies like Magic Mike XXL. The city will launch its own regional filming incentive in January, which will be available in addition to Georgia’s state production support.

Baywatch will be a loss for California. The state recently increased its filming incentive by more than tripling its annual tax credit fund, but the extra money heavily favours TV shoots so larger film productions still find places like Louisiana, Georgia and New York more competitive.
