Matt Damon’s upcoming action sequel Jason Bourne helped boost location filming on Tenerife in the Canary Islands in 2015.
Tenerife doubled for Greece in the new film, which is the fifth in the Jason Bourne franchise and the latest re-teaming of Damon with director Paul Greengrass. The movie's other locations have included London and Las Vegas.
Overall production revenue for Tenerife increased by €11m on 2014 figures, according to the island's film commission, although this included domestic shoots.
Most of the international productions that filmed in Tenerife last year came from Germany, while UK shoots were also prolific and included an episode of the BBC’s hit sci-fi series Doctor Who.
“The latest figures are a clear boost for Tenerife's economy – which especially benefits the island's tourism and audiovisual sectors – and the result of the work we have carried out over the last 16 years to position Tenerife as an outstanding international filming destination,” said Carlos Alonso, president of the Tenerife Island Government.
The island has long been a popular international production location, partly because in recent years filmmakers have had access to discounts by way of a special tax regime. Films like Fast & Furious 6 shot locally, as well as a remake of Clash of the Titans and follow-up Wrath of the Titans.
Tenerife and the Canary Islands now offer a filming tax allowance of up to 35%. In contrast, a production incentive for mainland Spain was only launched last year.
