A pilot for planned TV series Krypton – set in Superman’s doomed home world – is scheduled to film on location in Serbia.
The new series for Syfy will follow the exploits of Superman’s grandfather on Krypton two generations before the destruction of the planet that leads to Superman’s adventures on Earth.
David S Goyer is an executive producer on the pilot, which is being made for Warner Horizon and Goyer’s Phantom Four.
The superhero veteran previously worked on Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight movies and was a co-writer on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Krypton is likely to deliver a big profile boost for Serbia, which is not yet known as a production hub in Eastern Europe but does offer a 20% filming incentive.
In recent years the country has hosted productions like Ralph Fiennes’ modern-day movie adaptation of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, medieval warfare drama Ironclad: Battle for Blood and the sci-fi action film Lock Out.
Serbia offers PFI Studios in Belgrade as its main production facility offering nine sound stages.
Previous Superman prequel series Smallville was a big hit for Warner Bros. Television over ten seasons from 2001 and based production in British Columbia. Superman is once again appearing on the small-screen in Supergirl, which recently relocated filming from Los Angeles to Vancouver, in pursuit of stronger filming incentive support.
Serbia is an unusual choice for the Krypton pilot, but the filming location could yet shift for a full series commission, should the pilot prove a success.
