New drug drama Blinded by the Lights is being filmed by HBO Europe on location in Polish capital Warsaw.

Based on a novel by Jakub Zulczyk, the six-part series tells the story of a Polish cocaine dealer who must contend with Warsaw’s hedonistic underworld – known as a demi-monde – in the lead-up to Christmas as he prepares to go on holiday to Argentina.

“We believe Blinded by the lights, a story set in Warsaw’s demi-monde and showing off the city in a wholly new way, will not only appeal to Polish audiences but also to our subscribers all around the HBO Europe region,” said Antony Root, executive vice president of original programming and production for HBO Europe.

“We are confident it will equally excite audiences internationally.”

Poland is building its profile as an international production location and plans to launch its first formal filming incentive in 2017.

In September, Film Commission Poland organised a familiarisation trip around key filming spots for a group of experienced location managers to raise their awareness of what the country has to offer.

“Nobody from the group had ever been to Poland before so the main aim of the endeavour was to show Poland as an extraordinary and still fresh film destination combined with knowledge about the infrastructure and meetings with representatives of the Polish film sector,” said Tomasz Dabrowski, head of Film Commission Poland, in comments to KFTV.

HBO also recently announced it will co-produce a new drama series in Israel telling the true story of the investigation that followed the disappearance of three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank in 2014.
