Fiji in the South Pacific recorded its most successful year of location filming ever in 2016, hosting nearly 60 different shoots.

Collectively, the productions spent the equivalent of around US$20m in the archipelago and generated around US$60m in new economic activity, according to figures reported by Film Fiji.

The country offers a hugely generous 47% tax rebate for features and TV shows that spend at least US$120,000.

Commercials can also qualify for the tax rebate and have a much lower spending threshold of US$24,000.

“The 47% Film Tax Rebate, which is the best in the world, coupled with some of the world’s most stunning locations, has very much attracted this growing interest,” said Shaenaz Voss, chair of organising body Film Fiji.

“2017 is looking to be just as busy with more major productions expected in the country. Fiji’s production slate is full for the first half of 2017 with the pre-production teams from the various studios in the country or arriving within the next few weeks.”

Major international TV productions in 2016 included the US reality adventure shows Survivor and Kicking & Screaming.

The 47% tax rebate is likely to become a major selling point for Fiji in the coming years, especially given the limited number of tropical island locations with comparable financial support.
