Filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino will shoot a follow-up to his drama series The Young Pope on location in Italy in late 2018.

The Young Pope starred Jude Law as the world’s first American Pope, who causes social upheaval and political intrigue.

Sorrentino’s next drama The New Pope will also be set against the world of the modern papacy, but with a new lead actor.

Production for The Young Pope was largely based at Italy’s Cinecitta Studios as location filming is forbidden within the Vatican itself. The new series is likely to make similar creative decisions, while also doubling separate historical buildings in and around Rome for Vatican City.

Italy’s international production profile has grown since the country’s formal filming incentive was given a boost by the government.

Ridley Scott is scheduled to film locally for a new movie based on the infamous kidnapping of John Paul Getty III in 1973. Steven Spielberg has also been planning to shoot in Italy for his delayed period feature The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara, a story which involves the 19th century papacy.
