Pinewood Television was launched early last year to create, produce and finance high-end drama for the global market place, and is currently looking at ideas from across Europe.
The company was set up as a joint venture between Pinewood Group and StoryFirst PST Ltd, an independent media investment company that’s involved with international television production and general media distribution.
“Pinewood Television is a UK production company catering for both the UK and international markets, and also offering equity financing for filming in Europe and the US,” says Christian Wikander, in comments to KFTV. Wikander joined Pinewood Television last summer as director of co-production, .
“We’re identifying stories with international appeal and getting involved at all stages, from looking at pitches written on a napkin, all the way through the development process.”
The company is flexible in terms of filming locations and happy for specific projects to define their own production needs.
“Returning series are a priority and crime series are always popular,” Wikander says. “But we are trying to be very open.”
Pinewood Television recently announced The Child in Time as its first television commission, as a co-production with Benedict Cumberbatch’s shingle SunnyMarch TV – Cumberbatch also stars – and the US channel Masterpiece.
Pinewood Television is also a co-producer on Swedish crime drama Jordskott (pictured), which has been an international hit.
The creation of Pinewood Television is symptomatic of the continuing growth in popularity of high-end TV around the world, and Wikander agreed that cinemas are under pressure to develop the experience they offer audiences.
“Cinema needs to offer something more to get me off my couch,” he says to KFTV. “There needs to be more to get me to commit to a viewing experience with people I don’t know.”
