A TV drama set on Superman’s home planet of Krypton will be the first production to film at Belfast Harbour Studios in Northern Ireland.

Krypton is set decades before the destruction of the alien planet – as depicted in the Superman film franchise – and follows Superman’s grandfather in a story of political feuds and family honour.

The pilot for Krypton was in fact filmed in Serbia last year but production companies Phantom Four and Warner Horizon Scripted Television have chosen to relocate to Northern Ireland for the full series shoot.

Belfast Harbour Studios is Northern Ireland’s newest production facility and offers a pair of sound stages each spanning 32,670 sq ft, which can be opened up to create a single filming space.

“We are delighted to welcome Warner Horizon to Northern Ireland,” said Richard Williams, CEO of Northern Ireland Screen.

“Securing Krypton is a real coup for us and cements our position as a world-class filming location with a local and highly-skilled crew base with vast experience. The construction of the new studios by Belfast Harbour has added tremendous value to our overall proposition.”

Belfast is most famous internationally for hosting HBO’s Game of Thrones, a production that uses the city’s Titanic Studios as a base, but which is due to come to an end next year.

Productions shooting in Northern Ireland qualify for the UK’s generous filming incentive support.

Superman will make his next big-screen appearance in the ensemble superhero movie Justice League, which was based at Leavesden Studios near London. There is also a TV drama of Supergirl – cousin to Superman in comic book lore – which currently shoots in Vancouver.
