Movies qualifying for the UK’s generous filming incentive support spent nearly £1bn over the past year.
Tax relief supported 175 British films – and those considered British for tax relief purposes – ranging from the low-budget period movie Lady Macbeth to the superhero film Wonder Woman, the UK government figures revealed.
“The UK’s creative industries are one of our biggest success stories,” said Matt Hancock, the creative industries minister.
“They play a vital role in shaping the UK’s image and reputation at home and abroad, and through initiatives like the tax relief scheme we are creating the right environment for this dynamic sector to flourish and thrive.”
High-end drama The Crown was among 45 TV shows that qualified for tax relief and collectively spent £480m in the UK.
A recent report published by FilmLA in California revealed that US films spend more on production in the UK than they do anywhere else in the world.
