New York is celebrating an expanded TV production partnership with Netflix and Marvel Television having shot all of The Defenders superhero series in the city.

The Defenders (pictured) is a team of four superheroes, each of whom had their own TV series before a season finally united them.

Each character has had multiple series filmed on location in New York, expanding an original production deal made with the city. Twenty-six episodes are currently filming in the city and another 23 will be shot before the end of the year.

“We are very proud of the success of the Marvel Television/Netflix partnership,” said Robert A Iger, chairman and CEO of the Walt Disney Company, which owns Marvel.

“Thanks to Governor Cuomo's leadership and support of the film and television industry, we will produce a staggering 135 episodes by the end of the year, well beyond our initial commitment.”

Beyond Marvel Television’s output, 40 separate TV series are projected to spend $1.4bn on New York production through the course of this year. The state offers a total of 85 so-called Qualified Production Facilities, including film and TV studios.

While Marvel has made a substantial commitment to New York for its TV production, the studio’s feature films are largely based 880 miles away in Atlanta.
