Netflix is set to make its first Belgian/Dutch co-production, a 10-part series called Undercover.
Anna Drijver, Elise Schaap, Tom Waes and Frank Lammers star in the drama which is inspired by real events. It centres on an ecstasy producer whose luxury lifestyle is threatened when undercover agents attempt to close down his network and infiltrate his life.
It is produced by Jan Theys (Salamander), writer and showrunner Nico Moolenaar (Vermist) and directed by Eshref Reybrouck (Cordon) and Frank Devos (Chaussée D'amour).
Theys said of the commission: “I found it incredible to learn that the Netherlands and Belgium are such a huge part of the global drug trafficking network and Nico and the whole writing team have done a fantastic job of bringing this remarkable story to life onscreen.”
Netflix is partnering with Flemish production company De Mensen, Dutch Filmworks and VRT on the project.
Belgium is also set to host filming on Lookout Point and the BBC’s Les Miserables next year. The country offers a generous tax incentive and various grants along with a pro-active network of film commissions.
The Netherlands is one of the world’s most creative content markets, with producers such as Endemol based there. The Netherlands Film Fund is responsible for supporting film production in the Netherlands with a cash rebate on eligible Dutch spend, which went up from 30% to 35% this year.
