The Irish Film Board (IFB) is backing new sci-fi TV series Nightflyers, based on a 1980 novella by Game of Thrones writer George RR Martin, that is set to film near Limerick.

Nightflyers will film at Troy Studios, a facility that is helping expand Ireland’s production industry beyond capital Dublin, while also raising the country’s international production profile.

Through the course of 2017 and into this year, production spending outside Dublin has reached just under €50m.

The IFB supported production output of €84m in 2017, marking an increase of nearly 60% on the previous year.

Five creative co-productions are part of the organisation’s production slate for 2018.

High-profile international productions using Irish locations over the past year have included a BBC TV adaptation of Little Women, US dystopian drama Into the Badlands, spy thriller The Rhythm Section and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which filmed at various locations along the west coast’s Wild Atlantic Way.
