Superhero movie Shazam! has started filming in Toronto with director David F Sandberg.

Shazam! is a DC Comics creation. Zachary Levi plays lead character Billy Batson in the new film, who gains superpowers when he says the magic word ‘Shazam!’

Filming on the new movie is scheduled to wrap in early May. The production is part of Warner Bros.’ DC Extended Universe franchise, which brings together iconic characters from DC’s canon in a bid to emulate Marvel’s success.

Justice League was the studio’s key 2017 title and filmed mainly in the UK, while Aquaman shot in Queensland, Australia, and will be released later this year.

Warner Bros previously filmed Suicide Squad in Toronto, uniting many of DC’s most popular villains including the Joker and Harley Quinn.

Toronto is one of North America’s key production hubs. Key filming facilities include Pinewood Toronto Studios, which is scheduled to open a new 30,000-sq-ft building on its existing site in the spring.
