Hungary hosts filming for Marie Curie biopic
Rosamund Pike

A biopic about Marie Curie is in pre-production with filming due to take place in Hungary from next month.

British actor Rosamund Pike stars as the physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity in the late 19th century.

With her husband Pierre, she won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 and went on to win the Chemistry prize in 1911, making her the first person – and only woman – to win the Nobel Prize twice.

Marjane Satrapi is at the helm, best known to date for her animated feature Persepolis, adapted from her graphic novel of the same name.

She will be calling the shots from a screenplay by Jack Thorne. Working Title Films, StudioCanal and Shoebox Films are behind the feature.

Hungary frequently doubles for other European cities, particularly period dramas and features. UK shows to have filmed there include The Last Kingdom and ITV’s Maigret, in which Budapest doubled for 1950s Paris.

High-profile films to have shot there include Blade Runner 2049 and The Martian. Hungary offers world-class studios and crew along with a 25% rebate for qualifying productions.
