Italy’s famed Cinecittà Studios production facility in Rome is set to expand over the next three years with the help of €37m in government investment.
“We are going to build two new sound stages, one of which will be the biggest in Cinecittà,” said Roberto Cicutto, president of Luce-Cinecitta, the state-owned company that manages the studios, Screen reports.
“We will also restore the Teatro 7, which was destroyed by the bombings during the Second World War. It will have a pool for underwater shooting as well as new technologies.”
The new investment will also fund a refurbishment of the studio’s existing stages and back lot, and will additionally be used to establish new resources including a centre dedicated to tech development for videogame production.
Italy has enjoyed a resurgent profile as an international filming location over the past few years, in part due to an overhaul of its incentive support.
A new film version of biblical adventure story Ben-Hur and Paolo Sorrentino’s TV drama The Young Pope (pictured) both shot at Cinecittà, while superhero movie Wonder Woman used locations along the Amalfi coast.
Improvements to Cinecittà Studios should help Italy compete with the production infrastructure offered by its regional rivals Bulgaria and Hungary.
