Terrorism drama Homeland spent upwards of $40m filming on location in Virginia for its upcoming seventh series.

The show’s producers spent eight months filming in and around Richmond to tell the continuing story of Claire Danes’ former CIA agent, according to a report in NBC12 News.

“They come in from outside Virginia, leave money in our economy and then they go away and talk about all the stuff Richmond has to offer to their friends,” said Andy Edmunds, director of the Virginia Film Office, in comments to the outlet.

Homeland has told a firmly multinational story over the last few years. Producers initially filmed the show in North Carolina before changing the production base first to South Africa and then to Berlin, becoming the first US drama to shoot a full season in Germany.

Filming shifted back to the US in 2016 for a story that focussed on New York.

Virginia is not a US production hub but does offer a base 15% filming incentive. The eastern state has previously found success hosting multiple seasons of US period drama Turn, set during America’s Revolutionary War.
