Netflix is backing separate TV dramas currently filming on location across Poland and in Turkish capital Istanbul.

Famed Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland is among the directors of the eight-part 1983.

The series is an alternate-history drama set in a world where a 1983 terrorist attack impacted on world history by prolonging the Cold War into the 21st century.

The series is being produced for Netflix by The Kennedy/Marshall Company and the Warsaw-based House Media Company.

Location filming is scheduled for the Polish cities of Warsaw, Wroclaw (pictured), Lublin and Silesia.

“We are very excited to bring this gripping alternate-history thriller with such an amazing Polish cast to life and to continue the successful collaboration with Oscar nominee Agnieszka Holland and her great team.” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix.

“I’m confident that 1983 will not only attract Polish viewers, but Netflix members around the world.”

Netflix has also started production on an original superhero fantasy TV series filming on location in Istanbul, the title of which has not yet been revealed. The show is being produced by O3 Medya of Istanbul and is being directed by rising Turkish star Can Evrenol.

The twin production announcements come only a couple of weeks after Netflix revealed it will film its first Arabic series in Jordan later this year.

Towards the end of last year, the streaming giant said it would be spending up to $8bn on content over the course of 2018.
