A new London film studio has moved a step closer to reality with a preferred development bidder announced and construction planned to start in 2019.
Los Angeles-based Pacifica Ventures will work in partnership with Media Content Capital to build and operate the new production facility in the east London borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Plans for the Dagenham facility were first announced in the autumn of 2016 and a feasibility report was concluded last October.
The 22-acre Dagenham site will eventually offer 12 sound stages spanning 264,000 sq ft.
Producers will also have access to warehouses and workshops for lighting and grip operations, and a complex for post-production and visual effects. It is to be London’s first new-build studio in decades.
“This is an exciting development for both London and the UK, bringing as it does new infrastructure and much-needed additional capacity, while also representing a huge vote of confidence in our city’s ability to deliver world class-content, skills and creativity,” said Adrian Wootton OBE, chief executive of Film London and the British Film Commission.
Pacifica Ventures has a long history of developing state-of-the-art film and TV facilities. The company is integrally involved with Albuquerque Studios in New Mexico and with Sun Center Studios outside Philadelphia in Pennsylvania.
Several of London’s biggest studio facilities are undergoing long-term expansion. Film and TV producers also routinely adapt un-used warehouses and industrial properties as short-term filming options, both to save money and as an alternative when conventional studio space is unavailable.
