Netflix required to support German film subsidies

Netflix had challenged the law, partly because the company is not based in Germany, but the Court of Justice of the European Union has dismissed the challenge, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The streaming giant has the option to challenge the court’s ruling. If not, the company faces back-payments dating to 2014 and there would be implications for Netflix’s services in other European countries as well.

Netflix is involved with producers across Europe but faces a range of territorial challenges regarding distribution and exhibition laws, as well as regulations designed to protect and preserve domestic production industries.
