Argentina has launched a new $2.6m initiative to encourage more TV productions between domestic producers and international channels.

The country’s Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual Arts (INCAA) will provide producers with as much as half of their Argentinian spend when at least 30% of their budget goes to local crew, according to a Screen report.

Per-production payments will be capped at $248,000.

Projects filming outside Argentina’s production hub of Buenos Aires – long established as a popular southern hemisphere double for US and European cities – will be prioritised for support.

The first application window for the new fund will open on 5 September this year and close seven weeks later.

Argentina otherwise lacks formal filming incentive support but is building its international profile as a production location.

The South American country is already a thriving commercials centre and has also recently hosted scenes for Netflix feature The Pope – telling the story of Pope Benedict’s eight-year papacy – and drama series Edha (pictured), also for Netflix, which is set in Buenos Aires’ fashion world.
