Netflix will film its upcoming drama series Messiah in New Mexico, doubling the south-west US state for Middle Eastern locations.

Set in the modern day, Messiah will tell the story of a man who emerges from the Middle East claiming to be a messenger from God.

The series will chart the reaction of the world’s media and, on a smaller scale, the response of a collection of disparate individuals.

“We're proud to welcome another TV series to New Mexico,” said Nick Maniatis, director of the New Mexico Film Office.

“Once again New Mexico will serve as a double for an overseas location and show the world that we're the leading location for TV productions.”

New Mexico is America’s most popular stand-in for Middle Eastern story settings and has also doubled for Afghanistan in modern war films such as 12 Strong and Lone Survivor.

American productions sometimes look internationally for desert settings, with Morocco and South Africa among the most enduringly popular locations.
