A new movie in the Terminator franchise has started filming in Spain but will be largely based in Budapest from July.

The film is the sixth in the iconic sci-fi movie franchise and will again feature original star Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Director Tim Miller and his production team are reportedly ignoring the last three movies – none of which were particularly well-received – to make the new film as a direct sequel to James Cameron’s revered 1991 movie Terminator 2: Judgement Day.

This is likely to be due in part to Cameron returning to the franchise as a producer.

Spain’s international production profile has grown since launching formal filming incentive support and the country has also been boosted by hosting scenes for HBO’s Game of Thrones over multiple seasons.

Budapest is a key Eastern European production hub with a well-developed network of studios and has recently hosted high-profile films such as Blade Runner 2049 and Atomic Blonde.

As with most big-budget franchises, the Terminator movies have a history of following the best combinations of studio facilities and filming incentives, but the new film is the first to use European production locations.
