Filmmaker Taika Waititi has started shooting Second World War satire Jojo Rabbit in Prague, doubling the Czech city for Germany.
The movie tells the story of a young German boy who lives with his single mother and his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler.
Waititi has also written the script and is co-starring as the young boy’s interpretation of Hitler, alongside Scarlett Johansson as the boy’s mother.
“I’m stoked to begin shooting my anti-war satire,” said Waititi. “We’ve assembled an incredible cast and I couldn’t be more excited to finally ridicule Nazis and their beliefs. This film is going to piss off a lot of racists and that makes me very happy.”
Waititi is established as a comedy writer, director and actor in his native New Zealand, and also helmed Marvel’s superhero movie Thor: Ragnarok.
Prague is a European production hub, offering renowned studio facilities and visuals that make the city an easy double for multiple European settings.
Recent international productions have included drama series Carnival Row from Amazon Studios and Legendary Television that was based at Barrandov Studios and claimed filming incentive support of around €10m according to figures from the Czech Film Commission.
