Cable channel HBO Europe has started filming its first international co-production on location in Romania.

Hackerville is a Romania-Germany co-production that follows a Romanian-born German police officer who returns to Romania to hunt a computer hacking network that has attacked a German bank.

Location filming has begun in the city of Timisoara in the west of the country, Variety reports.

“The city of Timisoara in itself is a very cool location – a mix of Austro-Hungarian architecture with communist neighbourhoods, industrial sites, the river and its bridges,” said Tudor Reu, a producer on the series, in comments to the trade outlet.

“Our locations reflect the mix of old and new and include graffiti-painted urban areas, an abandoned village, a functioning refinery, railways and the internet cafe where our younger characters gather.”

Filming will also take place in Romanian capital Bucharest, and in Frankfurt, Germany.

Romania does not yet offer formal filming incentive support, although plans have been mooted for the past couple of years. The country may now be closer than ever to launching the necessary legislation, with Variety reporting that the government has acknowledged the need for measures within just the last few weeks.
