Actor and producer Dwayne Johnson filmed Vancouver as Hong Kong for his disaster thriller Skyscraper.

Written and directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, the movie follows Johnson as a security professional working in Hong Kong skyscraper The Pearl, which in the context of the story is the tallest building in the world.

Johnson’s character faces a fight to save his family when the skyscraper is attacked by terrorists.

Despite the China setting, production was based in Canadian production hub Vancouver, with the fictional Pearl realised as a series of immense sets built on stages.

Filming facilities included Washington Studios on the north side of Vancouver Harbour and Canadian Motion Picture Park further south in the Burnaby region of the city.

Physical production in China itself was limited to scenic plate shots for visual effects purposes.

Vancouver was Canada’s main filming centre in 2016-17, according to figures released earlier this year by the Canadian Media Producers Association.

The number of non-Canadian shoots in the city surged by nearly 50% on the previous year.

Deadpool 2 was a recent high-profile visitor to Vancouver and the Netflix sci-fi series Lost in Space is scheduled to return to the city in the next few months.
