Movie location filming has increased in Los Angeles for the second consecutive quarter, driven by big-budget movies including superhero feature Captain Marvel.
Location filming days for features rose by 11% over the past three months.
Quentin Tarantino’s 1960s-set Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, headlined by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio (pictured), and Transformers spinoff Bumblebee also in production in and around Los Angeles, according to a report from FilmLA.
Commercial location filming also increased – by 14% - but overall the city’s location filming days in fact saw a decline, with shoot days for TV dramas falling by nearly 10%.
FilmLA pointed out that the decline in TV drama was largely due to many shows being on hiatus through the time frame in question.
The agency’s report comes just a few days after new figures released by Creative BC in British Columbia revealed that several high-profile US features were among nearly 300 foreign productions to secure filming incentive support in the western Canadian province in the 2017-18 financial year.
Vancouver is a popular stand-in for California story settings partly because of a more accessible and comprehensive tax credit programme.
Sci-fi sequel War for the Planet of the Apes and comic book movie Deadpool 2 were among the biggest films to shoot in Vancouver in 2017-18, contributing a combined CA$180m to the regional economy.
Nearly all the foreign productions that shot in British Columbia also claimed tax credit support for post-production work.
Vancouver was Canada’s top location filming hub in the 2016-17 financial year, according to a report from the Canadian Media Pictures Association.
