Netflix has started filming on location in Jordan for the supernatural drama Jinn, the streaming giant’s first Arabic series.

Jinn will frame a coming-of-age story against the backdrop of a supernatural theme as a group of teens find themselves unwittingly unleashing “the forces of Jinn”, a supernatural entity found in Arabic and Islamic mythology.

“At Netflix, we’re always looking for local stories with an interesting and relatable perspective to bring to screens all over the world,” said Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix.

“With Jinn, we aim to create a fantastical show about young people in the Middle East in Arabic that's real, authentic and action-packed. This Netflix show will be full of intrigue, adventure and amazing storytelling from Jordan and for our audiences around the world.”

Jordan’s desert landscapes are sometimes used by international productions as doubles for more dangerous parts of the Middle East. The Netflix war movie Sand Castle used Jordanian locations as stand-ins for Iraq and Ridley Scott shot in the country for both his kidnap movie All the Money in the World and his sci-fi hit The Martian (pictured).

The country faces competition from popular production hubs like Malta, Morocco and South Africa, and also from New Mexico in the US.
