A drama series focussing on the character of Alfred Pennyworth, Batman’s butler and confidant, is set to film in the UK.

Entitled Pennyworth, the show will focus on the DC Comics character’s early life, which in the comic book canon involved service with British intelligence agencies before he came to work for Bruce Wayne’s father.

The series comes from showrunner Bruce Heller, who steered the drama Gotham (pictured) to a successful run on US network Fox.

Gotham explored the early career of James Gordon, the man who eventually becomes police commissioner in Gotham City, as well as the origins of several key villains of the Batman universe.

Heller will executive produce Pennyworth along with fellow Gotham veteran Danny Cannon, who will also direct the first episode of Pennyworth.

The new series is produced by Warner Horizon Scripted TV that is also working on the Superman prequel show Krypton from a base in Belfast.

Stories set in the Batman universe are currently having greater success on the small screen, with Gotham running to five seasons on Fox.

Batman last appeared in superhero ensemble movie Justice League in 2017, which used London as a production base, but the film was not critically well received, casting doubt on the big-screen future of the iconic character.

Filmmaker Matt Reeves is attached to a new standalone Batman movie that is reportedly in the development stage as DC and Warner Bros continue to assess a creative direction that will enable them to emulate Marvel’s stellar success.
