The US state of Georgia has set up a new coalition intended to promote the wide-reaching benefits of the state’s filming incentive.

The Georgia Screen Entertainment Coalition (GSEC) will advocate for public policies that help boost what the state has to offer film and TV producers, such as improving infrastructure and developing the regional crew pool.

More broadly, the purpose of the coalition will be to safeguard the filming incentive’s long-term future in Georgia by “educating” the public about how the programme benefits the state’s economy.

Filming incentives in the US often attract criticism as an allegedly irresponsible form of public spending. However, this is frequently the result of lawmakers focussing on the scale of tax credits and rebates paid out (that sometimes amount to many millions of dollars), while failing to consider the full economic impact of hosting films and TV shows.

Georgia’s Chamber of Commerce set up the GSEC and the organisation comprises a broad range of businesses including four of the state’s major film studios.

“The founding members of GSEC represent Georgia’s top industry and private sector leaders, coming together in a unique collaboration with Georgia’s deep crew base, united by their commitment to protect and promote the screen entertainment industry in our state,” said Chris Clark, president and CEO of the Georgia Chamber.

Georgia’s state capital Atlanta has become one of the top production hubs in the US for big-budget Hollywood features, partly as a result of the state’s generous filming incentive support.

Marvel has become a long-term resident at Pinewood Atlanta Studios, most recently using the facility as its base of operations for Ant-Man and the Wasp (pictured), Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War.
