Troy Studios outside Limerick in the west of Ireland has announced major expansion plans in a bid to attract more international productions to the country.

A fourth sound stage spanning 33,000 sq ft will add to the facility’s three existing stages and is planned for completion next year.

Crucially, the expansion will enable Troy Studios to host multiple productions at once.

“Troy’s new investment plan to increase studio capacity will be a further driver to grow Ireland’s €1.1bn audiovisual industry, to create more employment and take best advantage of the global increase in the demand for content,” said Joe Devine, chairman of the studio.

Troy Studios opened in 2017 as part of an overall strategy to develop Ireland’s screen sectors beyond Dublin’s production hub. So far the facility has hosted filming for the sci-fi TV series Nightflyers (pictured), based on a novella originally written by Game of Thrones author George RR Martin in the early 1980s.

Western Ireland has had a publicity boost in the last couple of years hosting scenes for two Star Wars films, though Lucasfilm still uses Pinewood Studios near London as a production base.
