A new film version of the 1970s TV series Charlie’s Angels has started shooting in Germany, using Studio Babelsberg near Berlin as a production base.

Elizabeth Banks is directing Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott and Ella Balinska as the eponymous ‘Angels’, who in the story are elite detectives.

Studios Babelsberg offers nearly two dozen sound stages outside Berlin, as well as indoor water tank facilities and standing back lot sets that include city streets with changeable architectural styles.

Producers also have access to an aircraft interior set mounted on a gimbal.

Babelsberg is also working with Banks and her Charlie’s Angels team as a production services supplier.

Banks is best known as an actress but has also established herself as a prolific producer. She was part of the team that turned the 2012 musical comedy Pitch Perfect into a box-office sensation and she directed the first sequel (pictured).

The new Charlie’s Angels film represents a reboot for the female-centric brand in the #MeToo era. Banks’ movie moves into production nearly two decades after the premise was last brought to the big screen in 2000 and 2003 with Drew Barrymore, Cameron Diaz and Lucy Liu.
