Netflix has announced plans to acquire Albuquerque Studios in order to establish a production hub in New Mexico.

The streaming giant intends to deliver $1bn in production to the state over the next ten years, as well as a thousand production jobs.

New Mexico is set to provide up to $10m in state funding to support the venture, while $4.5m will come from the city of Albuquerque.

Netflix’s recent shoots in the state have included the Emmy-winning Western series Godless (pictured).

Albuquerque Studios offers nine sound stages, with up to 48,000 sq ft of floor space available on a single stage.

In recent years the studios have hosted scenes for X-Men spinoff Logan and sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence, as well as one or two of the earlier entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe including the first Avengers film.

“Our experience producing shows and films in New Mexico inspired us to jump at the chance to establish a new production hub here,” said Ty Warren, Netflix’s vice president of physical production.

“The people, the landscape and the facilities are all stellar and we can’t wait to get to work – and employ lots of New Mexicans – creating entertainment for the world to enjoy.”

New Mexico is one of the top locations in the US for productions seeking desert story settings, but recently saw a significant drop in the number of big-budget shoots filming locally following three consecutive years of increases.

The New Mexico announcement is just the latest expansion news from Netflix. A few days ago, the company revealed plans to lease new office space in Los Angeles, and in the past week has announced offices to be opened in Paris and Madrid. The Spanish facility will support a separate production hub outside the capital.
