Warner Bros’ new monster movie Godzilla vs Kong will film in Queensland and will utilise Australia’s recently boosted Location Offset.

In May this year, the Australian government launched a new AU$140m filming fund, which effectively lifts the Location Offset support programme to 30% from 16.5%.

Godzilla vs Kong will be the fourth in Warner Bros’ self-styled ‘MonsterVerse’ brand.

The film will be the next production to shoot in Gold Coast after movie Dora the Explorer has wrapped.

“When I met with Legendary Pictures executives about Godzilla vs Kong in Los Angeles in June, I mentioned our world-class facilities, talent and expertise we have in Queensland and they made specific mention of how the Dora offset deal delivered by my government has provided certainty for production houses,” said Annastacia Palaszczuk, premier of Queensland.

“That’s why I was pleased when the Federal Government finally came to the party to deliver the location tax offset increase I’ve been personally campaigning for since 2015."

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (pictured) is the next in the series to launch, in May next year, following an Atlanta-based shoot.

The MonsterVerse franchise has shot in Australia before, with Kong: Skull Island having filmed largely in Gold Coast, while also becoming the biggest movie in many years to shoot in on location in Vietnam.

Australia remains a popular filming location due to its enhanced incentive support, skilled crew base and studio infrastructure.

Previous big-budget movies shot using Queensland production facilities have included superhero films Aquaman and Thor: Ragnarok.
