Netflix has greenlit a new police procedural drama that will be set in four different countries but filmed at the streaming giant’s new production hub in Madrid.

Criminal comprises 12 stories, each of which is set within the confines of a police interview suite. The settings are France, Germany, Spain and the UK, with three episodes per country making up the series.

The episodes will be in local language and, although written and directed by talent from the respective territories, will be produced by UK-based Idiotlamp.

George Kay and Jim Field Smith of Idiotlamp will be showrunners for the whole series; they also executive produce the UK block.

The French episodes are written by Frederic Mermoud, who also directs and executive produces, Antonin Martin-Hilbert and Mathieu Missoffe. Oliver Hirschbiegel (also director and co-executive producer) has written the German tranche alongside Bernd Lange and Sebastian Heeg. Spain’s instalments are penned by director and co-executive producer Mariano Barroso, Alejandro Hernandez and Manuel Martin Cuenca.

All 12 episodes of Criminal will film at Netflix’s new production hub at Ciudad de la Tele in Madrid in Tres Cantos, just north of the capital, where it offers three 1,200-sq-ft sound stages with an option to expand in the future.

Tres Cantos is managed by media company Grupo Secuoya, which will also service all Netflix productions that shoot at the facility.
