Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve is set to shoot a new adaptation of sci-fi tome Dune in Budapest and Jordan.
Frank Herbert’s original book was published in 1965 and tells a distant-future story of feuding families and dynastic conflicts, with much of the drama taking place on a desert wasteland planet called Arrakis.
Villeneuve (pictured) has experience with philosophical and grand-vision sci-fi stories.
He won critical acclaim for his 2016 alien contact movie Arrival and he followed that with Blade Runner 2049, which also shot in Budapest, using stages at Origo Film Studios and Korda Studios.
Jordan is a popular stand-in for desert story settings and will likely double for Arrakis in Dune. Star Wars: Episode IX, due for release at the end of this year, recently spent a few weeks filming in the country and Ridley Scott shot locally for both All the Money in the World and The Martian.
Rising star Timothee Chalamet will lead the cast of Dune, along with Rebecca Ferguson, Dave Bautista, Stellan Skarsgard and Charlotte Rampling, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Dune is considered a major filmmaking challenge. The story was famously made into a movie by David Lynch in 1984, which shot largely in Mexico, but was beset with production issues and continues to divide critics.
A US TV drama version was made in 2000, with shooting based in Prague and Rome. The show went on to win Emmy awards for its visual effects and cinematography.
