Porsche filmed commercial campaign on Skye

Porsche worked with Bee Film and LS Productions to shoot a commercial campaign on the Isle of Skye in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides.

The ‘Welcome to life’ campaign features drivers escaping the stresses of modern living by taking relaxed trips through the wilds of Skye in Porsche’s 718 Boxster T and 718 Cayman T models.

LS Productions helped the creative team consider locations across the UK before choosing Skye.

“The client felt that Scotland best communicated the wild, remote and rugged feel that they were seeking,” says Amy Morement, a location manager at LS Productions. “We were looking for a mix of single- and two-lane roads where we could have a minimum of two kilometres of uninterrupted controllable road."

“Skye could provide all of this alongside a variety of loch-side roads, bridges, glens and hairpin bends. The dramatic, prehistoric landscape is one of a kind.

“We knew we could make it work from a location perspective, even during a busy time on the island. However, it would not have been possible had we not had prior strong relationships with the local authorities and residents.”

As is often the case with car commercials, one of the team’s biggest concerns was keeping the vehicles themselves away from the public gaze during the shoot so as not to spoil the surprise of the eventual public launch.

The producers closed their main truck road over the course of their two-day shoot but made use of traffic management for other locations.

Communication with local communities was key to making the logistics work.

“We already had great relationships with the film office, roads department, police, local traffic management, local trusts, community groups, land owners and local residents,” says Morement. “All of this helped us minimise impact and mitigate any challenges that arose.”

Filming was also affected by bad weather so the team had unit-move contingency plans in place, using their knowledge of Skye’s geography to enable them to get the most out of their location time.

“The LS team backed the multiple locations put forth with a crew that really maximised our shoot time,” says Tonio Kellner, a producer at Bee Film.

“The rain made it an adventure, but Abi and her team were ever-positive - capable of pre-empting and troubleshooting issues swiftly.”

Skye’s profile as an international filming location has been on the rise in recent years. Feature shoots have included Justin Kurzel’s film adaptation of Macbeth, Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword and action movie Transformers: The Last Knight.
